He first kills the Jacobi family in Birmingham, Alabama, then the Leeds family in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1978, a serial killer nicknamed " The Tooth Fairy" stalks and murders seemingly random families during sequential full moons. Though Harris refers to one of these, The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun, he actually describes another, The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sun. The title refers to the figure from The Great Red Dragon Paintings by William Blake. Due to the success of the second and third films, Red Dragon was remade as a film directed by Brett Ratner in 2002, this time bearing the title of the original novel and with Hopkins playing Lecter.

Both film sequels featured Anthony Hopkins in the role of Hannibal Lecter, for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor in 1991. A second sequel, Hannibal, was published in 1999 and adapted into a film in 2001. It has since developed a cult following.Īfter Harris wrote a sequel to the novel, The Silence of the Lambs, in 1988 (itself turned into a highly successful film in 1991), Red Dragon found a new readership. Directed by Michael Mann, the film was critically well received but fared poorly at the box office. The novel was adapted as a film, Manhunter, in 1986 which featured Brian Cox as Lecter. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and cannibalistic serial killer.

This is a cracking good read from a master storyteller, and even if you've seen one or both movie versions, there's plenty here to keep you on the edge of your seat.Red Dragon is a novel by Thomas Harris, first published in 1981. He also introduces recurring characters, including Dr Chilton and Jack Crawford, and deftly keeps the tension on the boil as the police and FBI teams struggle to discover the identity of the killer. Although Lecter only appears briefly in this one, Harris sets the stage for the sequels, 'The Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal'. I first read this book many years ago after seeing the Michael Mann film version (Manhunter). Short on clues, the FBI bring in semi-retired investigator Will Graham to help track the killer, but with the murders linked to the lunar cycle, time is running out.

Seeking to satisfy his sexual hunger, the self-styled Red Dragon, is already planning the next murder. Lecter is already in jail, but the FBI needs his help to catch the killer of two families. In the first of the Hannibal Lecter books, Thomas Harris introduces his infamous psychiatrist in this tale of a murderous psychopath caught in the grip of a demonic delusion.
